Stand in the dining room of a 1930s Del Ray bungalow and you can usually guess where the wall is going to come out. It is the short one separating the cook from everyone else — the reason one person spends every dinner party alone with the stove while the conversation happens eight feet away. Flooring is the loudest signal. Cabinetry is the other half. Where the money actually goes
Cost in a project like this concentrates in places that are invisible when it is finished: the beam and its supports, relocated plumbing and electrical, patching ceiling and floor where the wall used to be, and the permit and inspection cycle.
